The affected people of the area by the sugar cane project in Rideemaliyadda proposed by the Singapore based Gazelle Ventures and local company IMS Holdings filed this case against the Mahaweli Authority and other responsible parties by objecting to eviction from cultivated lands by taking as an initial subject matter.
The project will grab 18,000 Ha land from local farmers and public land to cultivate sugarcane, generate power and produce sugar.Local people objecting this project since 2014.
CEJ organized a filed visit in relation to Rideemaliyedda Sugar cane case in Magistrate Court, Mahiyanganaya on from 24th to 26th May 2109 for preparing affidavits of the farmers who cultivate “Chena” at Akiriyankumbura and Dehigama areas situated in Rideemaliyedda Pradeshiya Sabha, against the ejectment notice filed by the manager of Rambakan Oya project conducted by Mahaweli Development Authority.
Further, CEJ set up a consultation with those who were victimized by the ejectment notices and 26 affidavits to be tendered to the Magistrate court Mahiyanganaya.
As per the request by the Centre for Environmental Justice, Attorney Triny Rayyan and Attorney Mahanama appear on behalf of the petitioners. (END)
