X-Press Pearl chemical ship accident is now 5 months old. Marine Environment Protection Authority is busy with cleaning the mess and removing the shipwreck. But it is not satisfactory. Only less than half of the plastic nurdles spilled have been removed. Nurdles have contaminated almost 700 km coast line in Sri Lanka. Most other chemicals polluted the sea is totally invisible. Many of the animal deaths are unaccounted. Fishermen received very little compensations.
When the ship was abandoned by the crew, Sri Lanka failed to get the custody due to limited capacity. P& I Club, the insurer became the entity responsible for controlling the salvage and handling payment. ITOPE, OSRL came for assistance have a vested interest.
People of Sri Lanka, are clueless about what is happening with this accident. The report here is a working paper which will update time to time with new information.
