The SA-JELP is the first journal focusing on environmental law and policy within the South Asian Region and it’s a brainchild of a collaboration between the Centre for Environmental Law and Policy (CELP) of the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, and the Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ). The SAELR was a compilation of eight landmark judgments from the South Asian region which highlighted the role of the courts and legal practitioners in environmentalism. In contrast, the SA-JELP puts the spotlight on the role of academia. The primary objective of the SA-JELP is to act as a platform for academic collaboration and the dissemination of knowledge within the region. The primary objective of the SA-JELP is to act as a platform for academic collaboration and the dissemination of knowledge within the region. This inaugural issue has taken the first step towards this goal by collecting and publishing four articles, two commentaries, a case review, and a book review written by prominent legal scholars from across South Asia. It is expected that researchers identify key issues and debating potential solutions which can eventually reach the masses and influence changes in policy. The SA-JELP is also expected to reach the grassroots and create awareness amongst students, civil society organizations, and the general public regarding new development in the field, thereby cultivating a steady stream of new cohorts of passionate environmentalists for the future. Considering the high linguistic diversity of the South Asian Region, we hope to translate summaries of the journal’s content into several of the main regional languages and publish them via SAJELP website in order to reach a wider audience.
