“Sri Lankas’ Illegitimate Debt and Why We Demand Debt Cancellation”

Sri Lanka is going through a severe debt crisis starting from late 2020. Sri Lanka is now in discussion for a possible $2.9 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund. Nature Conservancy, Nordic Bank and China are looking to buy Sri Lanka’s debt by keeping its nature as a mortgage under the “Debt for Nature Swap” scheme. Meanwhile private creditor Hamilton Reserve Bank Ltd. brought claims against Sri Lanka in the federal district court of New York in connection with Sri Lanka’s default on its bonds.
