“Sri Lankas’ Illegitimate Debt and Why We Demand Debt Cancellation”
September 9, 2022
Sri Lanka is going through a severe debt crisis starting from late 2020. Sri Lanka is now in discussion for a possible $2.9 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund. Nature Conservancy, Nordic Bank and China are looking to buy Sri Lanka’s debt by keeping its nature as a mortgage under the “Debt for Nature Swap” scheme. Meanwhile private creditor Hamilton Reserve Bank Ltd. brought claims against Sri Lanka in the federal district court of New York in connection with Sri Lanka’s default on its bonds.
The press conference for Day of Solidarity Actions with the People of Sri Lanka held at the Nippon Hotel premises was very successfully on September 07, 2022 Under the moderation of Mr. Hemantha Withanage, Senior Advisor, Centre for Environmental Justice.
The title of this press conference was “Cancel illegitimate Debt in Sri Lanka!”.
